A few words about Hydra
Hydra is the most famous island of the Saronic Gulf. It's a historic island, with a great nautical tradition, very active during the 1821 War of Independence against the Turks. Today it's one of the most developed islands in the Mediterranean Sea, with an intense cosmopolitan character.
Romantic and untouched by time, a popular destination for thousands of vacationers every year. The fact that there are no motor cars in the island, and transports are made either on foot or by donkeys and sea taxis, adds a fascinating sense of tranquility.
Periptero, Spilia and Hydroneta are the three most remarkable spots in the island. Periptero is a historic building that today houses a restaurant. It's worthwhile to stop there and enjoy the view of the port with the huge canons. In Hydroneta pier you can go and swim till the sunset. In Spilia you can enjoy swimming or have a coffee.
Α nice course, if you like walking, is from the town to Kaminia.
In the port of Kaminia you will discover the "Red House", a landmark of the island where art exhibitions and cultural events take place.
If you endure walking uphill, you can go to Kiafa, high over the port and continue till the Seven Windmills on the top of Agios Athanassios hill. The view from there will bewitch you!
The picturesque island oh Hydra is an ideal destination not only for those who want a peaceful vacation, but also for those who want a vivid and cosmopolitan life.
